I grew up in Oakville, Ontario and my childhood included: brothers, exploring woods and creeks, jumping off roofs, ballet lessons and participating on gymnastics and flag football teams. My favourite job was cutting the grass with Parks and Rec—driving the tractor and deciding what kind of donut to have at break was pretty sweet…
I graduated with a B.A.Sc. in Child Studies from the University of Guelph in /84 and after marrying and moving to Calgary, I obtained an Honours Art History After Degree from the University of Calgary. In both degrees I took several studio and design courses. I love colour so much that when orange started to appear in the Christmas lights it rattled me.
In my career with children and families I have worked as a behaviour consultant and as an Early Interventionist. More recently I have worked as an educational assistant and behaviour support with the board of education.
In a volunteer capacity I served as Chair person of the new Millennium playground installed at Dr. E.W. Coffin school in 2000, as well as sitting on the committee that won an Alberta Emerald Award for the Natureground Naturalization Project (2005--school/classroom category).
I’ve had the vicarious thrill of parenting two children who participated in swimming, diving, theatre, hockey and free-style skiing. My hobbies include forays into baking, concocting essential oils and random holiday crafts and crochet projects. In 2019 I joined Calgary’s Vocal Motion chorus, an award-winning women’s a cappella group. I think hobbies are vital to well-being.
Around 2014 when my son was nearing the end of his hockey time, I felt compelled to either start a post-hockey support group or write a hockey novel. I wrote several creative non-fiction pieces for Calgary Hockey Magazine, Canadian Stories and took a Creative Writing course at MRU in 2015/16.
I’m a big believer that truth is stranger than fiction and I think childhood is precious, worth preserving. Oh yeah, and I always read the last sentence of a book first. Follow on Insta @_jennifer_robin
